Stump Grinding in Ocoee
That old stump is in the way of mowing, attracting termites and taking up space you could use. We grind it below the surface, deal with the main roots and leave the area clean and level, so you can plant, lay sod or simply stop mowing around it.

Getting the Stump Out of Your Way for Good
Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel that chews the stump down into wood chips, well below the soil line. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, and it leaves no crater in the middle of your yard. Once the stump is gone, the space is yours again.
A stump left in place in Central Florida does not sit quietly. Heat and summer rain speed up rot, which draws termites and carpenter ants and sprouts mushrooms around the base. Some trees, like laurel oaks and camphors, keep pushing up suckers from the roots for years. Grinding stops most of that and removes a tripping and mower hazard.
It is also a chance to rethink the spot. If a tree came down on the west or south side of your home, you probably noticed the afternoon sun hitting harder. Clearing the stump lets you plant a new shade tree in the right place, which over time can take some of the load off your air conditioning.

What Our Stump Grinding Includes
- 01
Utility locate before we start
We make sure buried lines are marked before any grinding. Irrigation lines are a common surprise near old trees, so we look for heads and valves and work around them.
- 02
Grinding below grade
We grind the stump several inches below the soil surface, deeper where you plan to lay sod or plant. We will talk through the right depth for your plans during the walkthrough.
- 03
Surface root grinding
Exposed roots that run across the lawn get ground down along with the stump, so your mower and your feet stop catching on them.
- 04
Chip cleanup or reuse
Grinding makes a big pile of chips. We can haul them away, backfill the hole with them, or spread some in nearby beds if you want them as mulch.
- 05
Backfill and leveling
We fill the hole with soil and rake it level, so the spot is ready for sod, seed or a new planting bed.
- 06
Protection for the rest of your yard
Grinders throw debris. We set up shields to protect windows, cars, siding and pool screens, and we blow off driveways and walks before we leave.
Questions about Stump Grinding?
Call(407) 986-0087Signs It Is Time to Grind That Stump
Termites or ants around the base
Soft, rotting wood is an open invitation to termites. A stump close to your home is worth removing before they move on to something you care about more.
Sprouts keep coming back
If you are cutting shoots off the stump or seeing new growth pop up in the lawn, the root system is still alive and will keep trying.
Mowing around it every week
A stump means string trimming, scalped grass and the occasional bent mower blade. Grinding it lets the lawn run straight through.
Mushrooms and fungus
Clusters of mushrooms after a rain mean the wood is decaying underground. That decay can spread through the old roots and leave soft, sinking spots.
You have plans for the space
A new patio, a planting bed or fresh sod all need the stump gone first. Grinding is usually the first step before hardscape installation or sod installation.
How a Stump Grinding Visit Goes
- 1
Free on-site walkthrough
We come out, look at each stump, check access through your gate and note anything nearby like sprinkler lines, fences or a pool. You get a clear free estimate before any work is scheduled.
- 2
Marking and setup
On the day, we confirm utility marks, flag irrigation heads and set up debris shields. We use machines sized to fit through standard gates, so we can usually reach backyard stumps without damaging the fence.
- 3
Grinding the stump and roots
We work the stump down in passes until it is below grade, then follow the larger surface roots. A typical residential stump takes less time than most people expect.
- 4
Cleanup and backfill
We sort the chips, fill and level the hole, and clean up hard surfaces. You walk out to a flat patch of soil instead of a stump, ready for whatever comes next.
What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding
Every stump is a little different, so we price after we have seen it. Your free estimate lists each stump and what we plan to do with the chips, so there are no surprises at the end of the day. When grinding is one part of a larger yard project, you can spread the cost with financing for amounts up to $100,000, repaid over anywhere from 2 to 12 years, and paying it off early never costs you extra.
- Diameter of the stump
- Wider stumps take longer to grind. We measure across the cut surface at ground level, including any flare at the base.
- Type of tree
- Hardwoods like live oak grind slower than pine. Palm stumps are fibrous and behave differently, but they generally go quickly.
- Access to the stump
- An open front yard is simpler than a fenced backyard with a narrow gate, a slope or a stump wedged against a wall or driveway.
- Roots and depth
- Grinding a long run of surface roots, or going extra deep for a patio base or new tree, adds time.
- Chip handling
- Leaving chips in the hole costs less than hauling them off. Backfilling with fresh soil for sod is another option we can price for you.
Stump Grinding Questions We Hear Often
How deep do you grind the stump?
For most lawns we grind several inches below the surface, which is enough for sod or seed to grow over it. If you plan to plant a new tree or pour a patio in the same spot, we can go deeper. We will agree on the depth during the walkthrough.
Will the roots keep growing after grinding?
Most trees stop once the stump is ground, because the root system loses its food source. A few species, like laurel oak, may push up a sucker or two afterward. Those are easy to cut back and usually quit within a season.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but it is usually better to shift a few feet over, since old roots and decomposing wood stay in the ground. If shade for your home is the goal, we can help you pick a spot on the west or south side where a new tree will do the most good.
Will the grinder damage my lawn or sprinklers?
We flag irrigation heads and lines before starting and use mats or plywood where the machine crosses soft ground. There may be some light marks on the grass that recover quickly. If a line has grown into the root zone, we will tell you before we touch it.
Do you also take down the tree?
Yes. If the tree is still standing, our tree trimming and removal crew can take it down and grind the stump in the same project. For palms, see our palm tree pruning and removal service.
What happens to the wood chips?
That is your choice. We can haul them away, use them to fill the hole, or spread them in your beds. Fresh chips work best as a top layer and should not be mixed into soil where you are planting right away.
