ServicesPalm Tree Pruning and Removal

Palm Tree Pruning and Removal in Ocoee

We cut away dead fronds, heavy seed stalks and messy fruit so your palms stay healthy and your yard stays tidy. When a palm is sick or leaning toward your home, we take it down in careful sections and leave the ground clean.

Pruning that helps the palm, and removal when it has to go

A palm is not pruned like an oak. It grows from a single bud at the top, and it pulls nutrients from its older fronds as they age. Cut off too many green fronds and you starve the tree and weaken the crown. So we take only what is dead, broken or hanging, along with flower stalks and fruit clusters, and leave the healthy canopy in place.

Some palms are past saving. An infection with no treatment, a trunk that has split or gone soft near the soil, or a lean toward the roof or driveway all mean the tree is safer on the ground than standing. We will tell you plainly which palms need a trim, which can wait and which should come down.

There is a comfort side, too. Palms planted close to the house often drop fronds and seed pods onto the roof and into the outdoor air conditioning unit, where debris packed against the coil makes the system work harder. Keeping those palms clean helps your AC breathe.

What a palm visit includes

  1. 01

    Dead and hanging fronds

We remove brown, broken and drooping fronds at the base of the stem, cut cleanly so the trunk is not torn.

  2. 02

    Seed pods and fruit

Queen palms and others drop sticky fruit that stains pavers and draws insects. We cut the stalks before they ripen when timing allows.

  3. 03

No climbing spikes on living palms

Spikes punch holes a palm trunk can never heal. On healthy trees we use a lift, ladder or pole saw instead.

  4. 04

    Trunk boot cleanup

On sabal palms we can trim loose old leaf bases if you want a smoother trunk, without cutting into live tissue.

  5. 05

    Sectional removal

Unsafe palms come down piece by piece from the top, lowered away from your roof, fence and plantings.

  6. 06

    Haul-away and raking

Fronds, trunk sections and fruit leave with us, and we rake the lawn and beds before we go.

Signs your palms need attention

  • A skirt of brown fronds

Dead fronds hanging against the trunk catch wind, hide pests and can fall on people or cars.

  • Fronds resting on the roof or AC unit

Palms near the house can scratch shingles and clog the outdoor condenser. A trim keeps them clear.

  • Fruit all over the patio

Fallen dates and seeds stain concrete and attract roaches and rodents. Cutting the stalks early stops the mess.

  • Conks or soft spots at the base

Shelf-like growths near the soil line can point to ganoderma butt rot, which has no cure and weakens the trunk from inside.

  • The whole crown turning bronze

If the newest spear leaf dies and the canopy browns fast, the palm may have lethal bronzing. We can look at it and give you an honest answer.

How the job goes

  1. 1

    Free walkthrough

We walk your yard with you, look at each palm, and point out what needs trimming, what can wait and anything that looks unsafe. You get a free estimate before any work is scheduled.

  2. 2

    Setting up

On the day, we park so we do not block you in, mark off a drop zone and cover delicate plants or move patio furniture if needed.

  3. 3

    Cutting with care

Pruning keeps the green fronds that point sideways and up. For removals, we lower sections with ropes rather than dropping whole trunks.

  4. 4

    Cleanup and a last look

We haul everything away, blow off hard surfaces and walk the yard with you before we leave. If a stump remains, we can talk about stump grinding.

What affects the price

Every palm is priced after we see it, because two trees in the same yard can be very different jobs. Your estimate is written out so you know what each palm costs before we start. If a bigger project is easier to pay for over time, financing is available for up to $100,000, with terms anywhere from 2 to 12 years and no penalty for paying it off early.

Height and species
A short pygmy date palm is quick work. A tall Washingtonia needs a lift and more time.
How many palms
Doing several palms in one visit usually costs less per tree than calling us out for each one.
Access
Palms behind a fence, over a pool cage or beside power lines take more rigging and care.
Pruning or removal
Removal involves more cutting, lowering and hauling than a trim, and grinding the stump is a separate line.
Debris volume
Heavy fruit loads and years of dead fronds add up to more material to haul away.

Palm pruning and removal questions

How often should my palms be trimmed?

Most palms here do well with one trim a year, sometimes two for fast, messy species like queen palms. Many homeowners schedule it in late spring, before hurricane season, so loose fronds are gone before storms.

Should I get the hurricane cut where only a few fronds are left?

We advise against it. Stripping a palm down to a few upright fronds removes the leaves that feed it and can leave a thin, weak neck. A palm with a full canopy actually handles wind better.

My palm has yellow lower fronds. Should you cut them off?

Not right away. Yellowing older fronds are often a sign of a nutrient shortage, and the palm is still drawing from them. Cutting them can make the deficiency worse, so we usually leave them until they turn fully brown.

What happens to the stump after a removal?

We cut the trunk low to the ground. Palm stumps break down faster than hardwood stumps, but if you want to plant or lay sod there soon, our stump grinding service clears it.

Will you damage my lawn or beds?

We lower sections instead of dropping them, protect plants near the drop zone and rake up when we finish. If an area does take a hit, we will point it out and talk about it with you.
